NOUN Course Registration Guide: How to Register Courses on the Student Portal

Course registration is one of the most important things you will do every semester at the National Open University of Nigeria. Fail to register your courses correctly and you risk not being allowed to sit for examinations — even if you have paid your fees. This comprehensive guide walks you through the entire NOUN course registration process, explains the rules, and tells you exactly what to do when something goes wrong.

Why Course Registration Matters

In NOUN's Open and Distance Learning (ODL) model, your access to course materials, TMA submissions, and examination sittings is tied directly to your course registration for that semester. If a course is not registered:

  • You will not be able to submit TMAs for it.
  • You will not appear on the examination attendance sheet.
  • You will receive no grade for the course, even if you study independently.

Register your courses as early as possible at the start of each semester.

Before You Register: Prerequisites

Complete these steps before you log in to register:

  1. Pay your school fees — Your account must show a cleared payment for the current semester before course registration opens.
  2. Clear any outstanding fees — Unpaid fees from a previous semester may block your registration.
  3. Know your programme requirements — Have your programme's course list handy. Know which courses are compulsory (C) and which are electives (E) for your current level.
  4. Check the academic calendar — Registration windows open and close on specific dates. Registering late may attract a late registration penalty.

Step-by-Step: How to Register Courses on the NOUN Portal

Step 1: Log In to the Student Portal

  1. Go to nou.edu.ng and click on Student Portal.
  2. Enter your Matric Number (e.g. NOU123456789) and your Password.
  3. If this is your first login, your default password is usually your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format. Change it immediately after logging in.

Step 2: Navigate to Course Registration

  1. From your dashboard, click on Registration in the left menu.
  2. Select Course Registration.
  3. Choose the current academic session (e.g. 2024/2025) and the semester (First or Second).

Step 3: Select Your Courses

  1. The portal will display your programme's available courses for that level and semester.
  2. Click the checkbox next to each course you want to register.
  3. Pay attention to:
    • Credit units — each course carries a number of credit units (usually 2 or 3).
    • Compulsory vs. Elective — compulsory courses must be registered; electives give you options.
    • Pre-requisites — some courses require you to have passed a lower-level course first.

Step 4: Check Your Total Credit Load

NOUN has rules on minimum and maximum credit loads per semester:

Student StatusMinimum CreditsMaximum Credits
Regular student15 credit units24 credit units
Probationary student12 credit units18 credit units

Students on academic probation (CGPA below 1.0) may have their registration restricted by their faculty.

Step 5: Submit and Print Confirmation

  1. Review your selected courses once more.
  2. Click Submit Registration.
  3. The portal generates a Course Registration Form. Print this form or save it as PDF.
  4. Take the printed form to your study centre for signing and stamping if required by your faculty.

Courses You Should Never Miss Registering

General Studies Courses (GST)

NOUN requires all students to complete a set of General Studies courses regardless of their faculty. These include:

  • GST101 — Use of English and Communication Skills I
  • GST102 — Use of English and Communication Skills II
  • GST107 — The Good Study Guide
  • GST201 — Nigerian Peoples and Culture
  • GST302 — Entrepreneurship Studies (often includes a business plan assignment)

Missing any required GST course will hold back your graduation.

Faculty Core Courses

Each faculty has a list of core courses that must be completed for your degree. Missing these — especially in your 200 and 300 levels — can push back your graduation by a full semester.

Common Course Registration Errors (and Fixes)

"Course not available for your level"

This means the course is meant for a different level. Double-check that you are registering level-appropriate courses. If you believe it's an error, contact your faculty officer.

"Pre-requisite not satisfied"

You cannot register a 200-level course if you have not completed (or registered) the prerequisite 100-level course. Check your transcript and resolve the pre-requisite first.

"Registration portal is not open"

You are trying to register outside the registration window. Check the academic calendar for the exact opening and closing dates.

"Fee payment not reflected"

Your payment may not have been processed yet. Allow 24–48 hours after bank payment. If it still isn't reflecting, visit your study centre with your bank teller as proof of payment.

"Maximum credit units exceeded"

Remove one or more courses from your selection to bring your total below the maximum (usually 24 credit units).

Late Registration: What You Need to Know

If you miss the standard registration window, NOUN typically allows a late registration period of 2–4 weeks, but with a penalty fee (the amount varies by session — check the academic calendar). After the late registration window closes, no further registrations are accepted for that semester.

How to Add or Drop a Course After Registering

During the add/drop period (usually the first 2 weeks of the semester):

  1. Log in to the portal and go to Course Registration.
  2. To drop a course, uncheck it and resubmit.
  3. To add a course, check it and resubmit.
  4. Print a new copy of your Course Registration Form after making changes.

Once the add/drop period ends, you cannot change your registered courses for that semester.

Course Registration Tips for New Students

If this is your first semester at NOUN, here are the most important things to remember:

  1. Your study centre is your first point of contact — The staff there know the current requirements for your faculty and can guide you in person.
  2. Register early — Portal traffic is heaviest in the last few days before the deadline. Systems can slow down or crash.
  3. Keep your confirmation form — Store a digital and physical copy. You may need it if there is a dispute about your exam eligibility.
  4. Don't over-register — Taking too many credit units in one semester increases the risk of poor TMA performance and exam failure. Start with 18–20 credit units in your first semester.

What Happens If You Don't Register?

If you do not register any courses for a semester, NOUN may classify you as an inactive student for that session. Prolonged inactivity (more than two consecutive semesters without notifying NOUN through a deferral) can result in your registration being cancelled.

If you cannot continue studies for genuine reasons (health, work, financial), apply for a deferral of study through your study centre before the semester begins. This protects your student status.

Key Resources

Course registration might seem like a chore, but done correctly and on time, it unlocks everything you need for a successful semester. Take 20 minutes at the start of each semester to log in, select your courses, and print your confirmation — it's one of the best academic habits you can build as a NOUN student.
